With two stores in Nelson and an online shop serving customers nationwide, we have grown to become one of New Zealand’s leading online retailers for premium outdoor and performance gear.

Where it all started

Founded by current owner Hamish Pirie in 2006, Gearshop began from a practical need. Through his volunteer Search and Rescue work in New Zealand, Hamish saw a gap in the local market for quality equipment he had come across overseas but could not easily source here. He started Gearshop to help bring reliable, high-performing gear to New Zealand adventurers, and that same purpose continues to shape the business today.

We prioritise smaller suppliers and family-owned businesses that have a genuine connection to the gear they design and make. Gearshop is the exclusive New Zealand stockist for certain brands, giving you access to specialist products not widely available elsewhere.

Advice from people who use the gear

Expert advice is just as important as quality products. Our team are active outdoor people themselves, with firsthand experience across climbing, caving, tramping, biking, kayaking, sailing and travel. Some also bring experience as guides and instructors. Because they use the gear themselves, they know it inside out and can offer practical, experience-based advice to help you choose the right kit for your adventures.

Built on real outdoor experience 

That connection to the outdoors goes even deeper. Gearshop actively supports Search & Rescue in New Zealand, with our team members involved in Cave SAR, NZ LandSAR, NZUSAR and Rescue Helicopter operations around the greater Nelson/Tasman region. We also support these teams around the country with equipment advice and specialist gear requirements. This real-world experience gives us a strong understanding of the environments you're heading into and the importance of gear that performs when it matters most.
